Hot alternator stops charging?
2004 Chevy Express 3500 6.0
I got my van hot while I was on city surface streets (the temperature was half way between 210 and max). Eventually I gave up looking for the destination and idled the van for a while trying to get my bearings. At one point I turned off the van for 10 minutes and when I restarted it the battery voltage was at 12. I turned everything off and reved the engine but it wouldn't go up. I shut things down and turned on my generator which has a trickle charger tied to the battery and was able to get the voltage back up to 14 after about 1 hour. No problems in a 1 hour drive after that but I'm concerned. Should I be buying a new alternator?
Cheers, Steve

nope. Sounds normal.
Forcing the voltage up was just cooking the battery.
235 deg coolant temp isn't normal though.

It seems to be OK again. I put couple tanks of fuel through it and the charging is back to normal but I've lost some confidence in things. I'll have to carry my clamp-on meter with me and try to catch this again if it happens again.
