Intro & ? CB Radio Installation 2017 Chevy 3500 LT Ext
Hello fellow chevy owners!
Just found this forum in search of Chevy related questions that I am looking for answer's on, thought I would register & see if anyone could help me out. Last year I purchased this used Chevy Express 3500 LT Ext passenger van. We opted to remove all the seats & let the dealer keep them for a lower price on the vehicle. We primarily use it as a daily driver & hauling things, groceries & due to needing room for a wheelchair (manual or electric) is why we opted to lose the seats as well. So now it's more of a "comfort" cargo van & has absolutely no storage which is one of my questions upcoming.
However for the sake of the topic, I have installed a CB in the van via switched cigarette. lighter adapter but I want to move over to a more permanent option. I've ran a ground wire to the battery & tapped (add a circuit w/ 5amp fuse) ) to the radio fuse (15amp). I know enough about the mechanics of a car to get myself into trouble, I've worked on older cars (which I like to do) but with all the newer one's the electronics is foreign to me.
I was under the impression that if I tapped the fuse for the radio & I turned the radio (or van off & opened the door) it would also cut the power to the radio. Apparently that is not the case because the CB still has power & have to manually turn it on/off. I'm looking to tie in the CB so that van on = radio(s) on & van off (& door opened) radio(s) off.
The Main Question:
Is this possible via the floor console fuse box under the driver side? I'd rather not have to run another external wire to the engine fuse box, the ground wire I ran is a little janky in my opinion because I wasn't sure & couldn't find / get access to a good place in the vehicle to for the ground so I took it out via the plastic driver side foot well, up the rubber trim seal, out the door between the fender frame & over to the battery.
As this a "new" vehicle to me, previous vehicle was a 95 Ford Econoline XL that finally just got to were couldn't find parts that needed to be replaced & after almost 30 years as a daily driver it kind of kicked the bucket. I've not had the time to become familiar with all the tech changes to vehicles & all the new fangled bells 'n whistles they've started adding to cars.
I'm also looking for a different antenna option, on the previous vehicle I had a CB installed in a similar way but with a hood mounted FireStik ant. However the mount I have won't work on the Chevy so currently I have cheap..short ...4 inch ? Wilson I think, magnetic ant. on the roof with the cable run through the driver's side middle window up to the CB mounted on the glove box.
I'd like to be able to use my Firestik again & not have to spend more money on another antenna. I tried previously to mount the antenna in the hood channel, got weird SWR readings & mounting the firestik via a clamp style mount in the rain channel. That also resulted in SWR readings that were far from optimal, it's a 4 ft antenna mounted on an already high riding vehicle. I can't seem to find a good antenna setup(for range & clarity), I'd rather not have to use springs (break-away mount?) or bumper mounts, I don't want to be drilling holes in the van & I've thought about doing a whip antenna but I don't really like how that would look either(I would maybe if it was the van in A-Team, the original & not the ****ty remake).
So if anyone has any other options or suggestions for me on the antenna situation I'd appreciate it.
Sorry for the long novel of a post.
