Tuesday was a busy one, but here it is. Open the door. While pulling the strap towards you, close the door until you feel it release. Don't let it go just yet, as it has a spring on it, but you can now open the door all the way. When it comes time to close the door, it will spring back to limit opening again, all on it's own.
I just tried it. Wow, do I ever feel slightly obtuse for not being aware of that. Mine still seems to have a second catch, to avoid catastrophic swings into the body, but now that all makes a lot of sense. At least I now know how to go "full open" when the van is parked on level ground.
You wouldn't believe the hundreds (if not more) of things like that that make you slap yourself that I've missed in my 60+ years. You don't know what you don't know. And then you do.
