Default Need more Headspace in my 1995 High Top

Dear Guys,

my wife and i bought a 1995 Chevrolet G20 Van in original, very good condition.
Iīm a tall guy, that getīs me in Trouble. Between my head and the headliner isnīt enough space to sit relaxed. The Van is a high top Van, but between the hightop and my head, is the original sheet metal low top.
A friend of mine has a 1986 G20 Motorhome, the sheetmetal was cut off (original)
Does anybody know, for what i need the metal -lowtop? Is it just for Stabilisation on the TV?

Thank you.

Truthfully, I have no specific experience in this, but some common sense and a close inspection should give you an answer. Flex the metal roof panel to see if it offers structure. If it seems tight, it may be supporting the van sides from "falling" outward. I'd like to think it isn't needed, but you never know. It does make some sense about the TV support.

I had heard many years ago that it was a safety requirement to the hightop installers to leave that section to provide roll-over crash protection, also had heard that in order to have a "certified" hightop passenger van (to commercially move passengers) the installers had to add a steel support structure with the hightop to provide the same.
In practice it does help keep heat and air conditioning contained, but, if I wanted it gone, I wouldn't blink an eye about cutting it out..
