Question What Oils are still Dexos1 approved? Chevrolet, 4.8L

Wondering if I should go with a Blend...or full synth. Then I see ONLY FULL SYTH brandss are DEXOS1 approved currently The engine is 14 years old with 55k, I just became the owner this week so trying to do the right thing...I know full synth is suppose to be better but I worry about creating leaks if the previous owners used the Blends...ANy thoughts??

I believe the full synthetic leak story has been debunked. I have run fulls in my 85 200SX and 93 Suburban, both over 350k miles. Your 55k motor is just getting broken in!! Pick your favorite brand and follow maunufacturers directions on weight.

I have no fear of full synthetic oil. I've never seen anything proven on the issue of leaks. When synthetic oil first came out there were a lot of myths circulating about but none of them seem to have played out.

Earlier this year I did a deep dive into Valvoline Restore and Protect and was very impressed with what I found with it's cleaning properties. I've always been a Mobile1 guy but used the Valvoline RP a few months ago. I just drained it after 3,000 miles (early for me) and the oil was darker than I expected and had a brown varnish color to it. I know it's not scientific but it does seem to be cleaning up the varnish deposits as claimed.

I'm going to keep with the 3,000 mile intervals until it starts coming out cleaner. I kept a sample so I can compare them in another 3,000.

My van has a lot of miles but seems very tight. I don't lose any oil at all between changes. I check it regularly but never have to add. I don't think it's darkening the oil with blow by or contamination.

Sounds like a must do in the future for me too. Thanks so much for this info. Back in 1995 I went full synth on a truck with no leaks, 30k on her and in the Am a couple of days later I had synthetic drops all over the driveway. Put DIno back in...in a panic and boom. Never leaked again so not stating I have any idea what happened there but...made me a bit cautious about ever using full synth again. Yea it was 1995 and a Jeep, not a 2012, Chevy with 55K on her. Got it...Thanks so much..
