I just bought a 1964 covair conv and I can't get it into neutral, so I can push it on the trailer? I know it sounds stupid, but I know I'm just missing something...thanks for any help...mike

 

Did you try pushing in the clutch?

Just kidding.
I'm assuming it's a stick shift, 'cause if it was an automatic it would still push. It has a linkage simular to a Volkswagon Whereas the shifter pushes the linkage in and out and rotates as it's going from 1-2, to 3-4, and reverse. Not the best setup. I have had it jam up in both types of vehicles.

 

My previous post probably didn't help much.
If you can get at it, check the linkage in the front of the transmission.
If you have a buddy that can wiggle the shifter while you are at the tranny,you might be able to get it into neutral.
Keep in mind that once you get it home that this will need some attention.
On a side note, Keep an assortment of hand tools in the car at all times.
Corvair's are awsome cars, but definateley a hands on type of car.

How long has it been sitting? Are you sure it won't go into neutral or could the brakes be frozen up with rust?

Is it parked facing upwards on a hill or inclined driveway? You may just need to push it forward enough to get the weight of the vehicle off the shifter,then shift it into neutral.

In the event this is the case, get ready with the parking brake, cause once it's in neutral, it's going to want to roll downhill...

 

Thanks for your help, but I did jack all four wheels up and the front two will turn independently but the rear wheels turn opposite of each other and only in one direction. The driver side turns forward as the pass side turns in reverse but not the other way. So when I let it down in will not roll. I also move the Trans leveler under the dash between d, n, and r and try the turn them again with no change. I am guessing that there has to be some sort of decoupling pin to release the Tran for the axle for emergencies or the engine has to be on, or the battery has to be hooked up. I think I am just missing some simple, but I cannot figure it out

OK, right now the mission is to tow it back to the garage, and times a-wastin'.

How about the old drop the driveshaft trick? Unbolt two U-joints and Git-R-Done!

Then if the parking brake still fights ya, try loosening the cable at the adjuster linkage. As
I recall, the Corvair had a center lever manual parking brake for the rear wheels?
