1979 305 chevy pickup
we have a 1979 305 pickup we are trying to get back up and running and we have run into some problems and don't know what to do.
we changed all 2x
distributor
cams/lifters
timing chain and gears
plugs/plug wires
distributor cap
carb
fuel pump
the motor is still poping back through the carb. Any ideas what we can change or do would be great, we have just about give up.

The harmonic balancer on the Chevy small-blocks tends to slip sometimes, showing the timing mark in the wrong location on the crankshaft.
1Gary is absolutely correct, you have to ignore the harmonic balancer's current position, and re-mark the balancer, if it is not in sync after you line things up.
Also, if memory serves, they were still using nylon timing gears in some of the small blocks back then, would cause the chain to jump if a tooth or two broke off during a run and gun. That would put the cam and crank out of time with each other. Might want to pull that timing case cover and scope out those (hopefully not nylon ) gears and timing chain.(stretched?)
