Default 1987 gmc jimmy 2.8 liter, running horrible, sputters at start offs HELLLPPPPP

Motor runs horrible at the start, sputters and sometimes wants to die out, its a friend of mines and and he was complaining about the choke acting up, so i ran the choke to the starter switch wire so it would only engage once the starter was turning over. Once i finished that and I cranked it up and it ran fine, now two days later he says its doing this. The carb was rebuilt not long ago, and it was running completely fine up until a few days ago, bad gas? any ideas on what it could be?

Check it base plate gasket for a vac leak. Is the base plated heated?
