Default 1989 chevy 2500 - Rack and Pinion

I took my truck to get some alignment work done since steering is very loose. They quoted me above 1,000 and said I needed my steering redone. I am pretty familiar with engines but not steering. I have been looking for a rack and pinion for my year of truck and can't find any online. Can anyone share some links and/or advice on what I may need to get the steering in good condition?

Your truck does not have a rack and pinion, it uses a steering box.

They were trying to butt bone you man. If you are patient and know engines why dont you do it yourself? Tie rods are $14 each outer and like $20 inner x 2, pitman arm bushings, idler arm bushings, maybe a drag link arent expensive, ball joints x 4 and control arm bushings, sway bar links and bushings. Nope, not $1000 yet. Maybe $300 in parts $450 if you do shocks and coil springs and a Saturday and Sunday to do it all.

So since the steering needs "redone" (whatever that entails, did they detail out what that was?) they did not do the alignment, right?

$1000 for the $300 in parts mentioned by RacerX installed might be the going book rate when you pay someone else to do the labor.

P.S.
Welcome to the forum.

Rarely does a steering box wear out. But if yours is a lifted 4x4, and used and abused as a 4x4, that will excellerate wear.
