Default 2005 tahoe clicking noise

I have a 2005 tahoe and motor is making very loud clicking noise. I took it to a mechanic today and he said the valves are sticking and I need the upper part rebuild. Estimate $3000. He gave the estimate by just looking and listening. Check engine light came on for misfires. Wonder if he is that's right or could it be something else? Anything I could try first? I'm in collage and really don't have that kind of money.

Welcome to Chevy. How long have you owned your Tahoe; what motor, how many miles; is it burning oil???

I had the tahoe fo3 about 3 years and my dad for 6 years. Has 250k miles and 1 quart every 3 months. But I don't drive that much. No leaks under. It is 5.3l

I would not put $3k into a rebuild. It rarely works out. And it's nearly the price of a fully remanufactured engine.

My 05 Suburban's motor was smoking and burning alot of oil by 250k; timefor new motor or new ride. Top end work alone will probably be a fail in the long term.

haven't seen many sticking valves in wet manifold pickups. I have seen worn cams, rockers arms, pushrods and lifters. Im not there and the mechanic is so I can't really second guess him. Does the noise occur at camshaft speed or crankshaft speed.

if the noise is camshaft speed, the next step would be removing the valve covers for inspection. This probably is 2 hours labour time.
