Hello all, I have a 350 chevy engine that had not run in about 10 years due to a transmission problem. The car a 1976 vette was garaged all this time. I am retired now so I am trying to get it going again. I put Marvel Oil in the cylinders and let it sit for a while then turned it over. I have changed oil and filter. After working thru several issues Starter, leaking gaskets, rebuilding the Holly, replacing rotted vacuum lines and fuel lines the beast cranked. The biggest concern that I have now is a lots of blue smoke out of both exhaust pipes. The engine hasn't run very long yet because I am concerned about the smoke and don't want to damage anything. The engine had a rebuild and was running good before it was garaged. I am going to get a compression tester tomorrow and do some testing. Rings stuck ? What do you guys think?
On a plus side, I had forgotten what a old school vette with a cam and headers sounded like, sweet

 

depend's on how long you had it running but it could be burning through thev rest of the marvel mistery oil remaing in the cylinders or the ring's could be stuck .

 

That Marvell exits pretty quickly.
I'm thinking you have a stuck oil ring.
Pull/clean the Plugs, run engine, and pull again.
Check and see which Cylinder shows an oily plug.
Then you can focus your efforts on the right Cylinder(s).
Reapply Marvell or other treatment to just those Cylinders.


PS:
Don't get in a hurry with the soaking process, sometimes it takes a couple days/repeated applications to break um free.

 

yes just like mr huston says it can take a while as it took year's to get this way,some times plain atf work' good.

 

You're so right on that one !
It would have been nice if the guy had poured a little ATF in those cylinders before he put it up, but...
I'd use ATF more as a preservative, Marvel has a much higher concentration of detergent and penetrant, and probably will work quicker in this instance.
