Part of the problem you have is getting an original 427 or 454.

Since '01 they've been putting out the "Vortec 8100".(320 HP) it's the same bore as the 454. It has a stroke of 4.37inches. a "GEN VII" engine, used in 3/4 ton trucks and medium duty commercial vehicles.

The fun here involves finding an actual H/O engine, over 10 years old. Obviously one which wasn't beat to death, or swapped for another engine, leaving you with the proper RPO code on the service parts identification sticker, but the WRONG engine actually in the car.

Furthermore, "stroking" to 496 can backfire by causing overheat problems when the block gets too thin between the piston walls and the cooling jacket.

Might just be easier to find a good block and do a solid "ground up" build, starting with a forged or billeted crank. If you really want extreme performance. And money isn't an issue.

You should set a target as to how much HP you want. These days, if you're actually competing, 1.5HP/Cu.in. (@600HP) is more realistic. If you just want some power without all the headaches and expense, then just settle for 1.2 HP/Cu.In.(@470HP) and your life will be considerably easier. (and you'll be able to afford to eat, once in a while)

yea stay away from late 80's blocks, when I was researching 454 thats what i've heard. If you can find a 60's or 70's block your in good shape. With 454's you def have to build them because from the factory they are crap (again unless you get one from the 60's or 70's) The 454 ss pickup from the 90's barely made 200hp.
