Default 4L60-E trans issues...

Hey guys, I have a 95 GMC G2500 Vandura conversion van with 170k miles (i believe it has a 4L60e), Has been running great with no issues until just recently. Occasionally (about 1/4 of the time) it will make a grinding noise when being put into reverse or drive right after starting it up. Once the van gets rolling, the noise will stop, and will drive fine (without the noise). I can idle at a light and shift into R without issue.

Park or neutral won't ever make the noise. But when I shift to D, it starts, and I can shift back to P to make the noise go away. Like I said, once it gets moving the noise will totally stop, even when shifting into reverse or idling at a stoplight.

Sounds like it's going to need a rebuild. I'm 250 miles away from home at my folk's place for the holidays. I am fairly certain it will make it back fine, but I definitely want to get it sorted as the plan was to take this van on a long trip.

Any suggestions other than just biting the bullet and rebuilding? Thanks guys!

Thanks for the reply. Fluid level is normal and appears nice and clean. No idea last time it was changed but I'll be trying it as a last ditch effort

I have exactly the same issue with my 1997 chev astro. Have you tracked down the cause of your issue?
Thanks
