Question 89 454 engine does not turn off please help

hi i am new to this forum. i have a 454 chevy engine and when i try to turn it off it goes from running on 8 cylinders to only 2 and when it turnes to only 2 cylinders than it backfires. i can even remove the key but it keeps on running. the engine has only 47000 miles on it.

Sounds like an ignition switch. Anybody else agree?

Thats pretty much all it could be.

There should be a fuse in your fusebox for the ignition switch. Pull it out, if the car stops , then you know what to replace.

Just a question out of curiosity though... how do you turn the engine of then?

definetely ignition switch then. It might even solve itself by just pouring some "grafit" in the key switch. (I dont know the english name really. The product is some sort of lubricant without any oil in it. You also use it to lubricate house door switches.)

its called graphite. well... i know its a lubricant and it contains no liquid. i used to use it on my pinewood derby cars. since we didnt have axles, we had a nail and a tire as the drivetrain, so you pour graphite into the gap from the wheel and nail and it makes it glide like nuts. but yea. its powder graphite. works on lots of things.

When they brought out all the smog crap for cars 70's we use to leave the automatics in drive and turn off the switch...or leave it in gear with a standard, turn off the switch and feather the clutch...with foot firmly on the brake in either case of course. How high is it idling? And 1Gary's right, where is the timing set?
