Celebrity “Power Steering Intermittent”
Chevy Celebrity Power Steering Problem, Jan. 2007
1989 Chev Celebrity station wagon, 2.5 L, 4 cyl TBI, Power Steering, 3 speed auto Xmsn type 125-T, 190K miles.
Power steering problem occurring at all temperatures.
When making turns at intersections or when parallel parking the power steering operates intermittently, meaning it operates in a jerky, but consistent, on-off fashion. Hard to describe in a detailed way but here's a try. Every one degree or so steering power goes away and then you have to muscle it for the next degree, then it comes back for a degree, then quits again, and so on. Thus the jerky aspect. The consistent part of it is the constant on-off action a degree or so at a time.
This is quite disconcerting when turning right at an intersection when there is a car facing you with little room while turning.
You do not notice anything at speed on highway, probably because you move the wheel so little, the engine is running fast, and there is little tire friction.
Appreciate any ideas about cause and corrective action.

I should have mentioned that I had already checked fluid level and belt, these are fine, no leaks, no slipping.
Regarding the problem description I shoud add that the problem only occurs at low speeds, at about 10 MPH or less, above 10 MPH all is ok. And there are no noises present when steering wheel is turned.

have you had any work done on the power steering lately. it could be that you might have air in the lines. easy fix is to lift the front wheels in the air and turn the wheels all the way left and right a couple of times..

I have not had any work done and I have kept the fluid level correct at all times.
How does your easy fix work?
It certainly is easy, do you think it would be worth a try?

cut the caron while the front wheels are jacked up in the air. while you turn your steering wheel it would relief the air "if any" in the lines. hope that helps.
