Cool Checking Automatic tranny oil level on older model.

Hi,
I think my question might not be model specific. On a 1972 G30 Van, 350 engine. How can I check the transmission oil level? I have checked on other vehicles by sticking my finger in the drain plug, but unless I'm am looking at the wrong place, the plug seems to be right on the bottom. Should I turn the vehicle upside-down? hehehe....Thanks!

Is there not a dipstick? You say its an automatic, but you post as if you where checking a standard.

Sorry, 1st time posting... This van is an automatic. I cannot find a dipstick anywhere, and, oh, have I ever looked! I guess the ones I have checked in the past were standards.
Thanks

Have you actually pulled the engine housing off, or just looked under the hood. Granted, it should be accesible from under the hood.

Yup, I have looked everywhere, under and over. I thing maybe the dipstick broke off or something.I have taken off the hump inside, looked through there...nothing.

If it's missing, someone would have had to plug off the port it went into. Look on probably the right side base of the tranny where the pan screws to. This going to be around 3/4". You can "check it" after you remove the plug, but really need to replace it. Thats probably going to have a salvage yard.
