Sorry for the confusion.

The transmission fluid moves at the same, or a slower rate through the

larger filter, which is deeper in the pan.

The way it was explained to me, GM feels the filter depth, (in the pan)and

the slightly larger filter size is going to make it easier for impurities to be more

easily trapped in the filter.

OK so you're saying that since there's more room in the pan, GM figured they may as well use that space to make a better filter.

I would suspect that the deep pan also provides additional cooling capacity due to the anticipated use of a 4x4

...which would make a lot more sense if it were installed on a lot more 4X4s.

I have a deep pan on my Astro AWD, and the transmission still gets too hot. I installed a stacked plate cooler to take care of that.

lol, for dummies: 1 oz if dirt in 12 oz of fluid does more damage than 1 oz of dirt in 16 oz of fluid, the dirt is spread out more (not as concentrated)
not only that but more fluid cools better too

Uhh yeah I get that, but the whole point of this thread was about the filter.

thicker filter that sits deeper in the pan, when fluid is low it still takes the fluid, also with the fact that it has more fluid to filter, just go with the big one to be safe

What do you mean by the fact that it has more fluid to filter? The fluid still moves through the same size opening in the transmission at the same speed. As someone has mentioned, the dirt is more diluted. Can you explain that better?
