Default Gas gauge not working

Hey everyone. Maybe some of you have experienced this and can give me a hand. I have a 2004 suburban LT. While driving the gas gauge will all of a sudden go to dead empty, and the yellow fuel light will turn on. Then 5 minutes later it'll go back to absolutely full. I thought I could just go off from my estimated mileage gauge, but apparently that's hooked to the gas gauge and fluctuates between 455 miles till empty and 0 miles till empty. Is it a bad instrument cluster or is it the gas gauge sensor that's in the tank? Thanks for your help.

During my many years of working on vehicles, it's almost always the gas-tank fuel sensor that goes bad, rarely the gauge.
