generator repair
Ok folks, we need to step back in time here a bit. I have a 60' chevy one ton flat bed that has a generator in stead of an alt. I want to keep the truck all original but the mounting holes on the generator are wallowed out and this causes the armature to become damaged. Any ideas on who I can contact about repairing the holes?
The generator was taken to our local motor man that does a good job and he rebuilt it, didn't say anything about the holes (one of which had a sleeve insert but did not fit very well) sent it back and it performed wonderfully, however I started to notice copper filings and sometime later the gen light came on I started having problems. Sent it back to the guy, he rebuilt it again and said that the holes being out of line with each other cause the belt to put more stress on the armature and thus the damage was done. Took the generator to our local machine shop and they wanted to charge about $300.00 for set up just to turn the holes to the same size. My dad suggested putting in a thread to see if there are any shops about that specialize in repairing such damaged articles.
Sounds like the commutator is shot. Try this, he deals in old stuff. I have done business with him before with no problems.

Ok, thanks.
Another thing I need to find out is the proper steps to polarizing the field. I did it once the last time I had the generator repaired but I have misplaced the instructions. Anyone able to refresh my memory?

Thanks for the site on polarizing your generator. So simple.
The wallowed out holes where on the generator itself where it attaches to the bracket that is on the block. I sure do appreciate the responses, dad didn't think I could do it with the tools we had but using the shopsmith, a file, and some patience I was able to make a bushing to fill the hole and redrill the holes to a little bigger size and now the mounting bracket is within 1/16 inch of parallel to the armature shaft. I don't believe that will be enough to cause wear on the field or armature. I guess time will tell.
Thanks again for the help and I will keep the repair shop in mind for future needs.
