I don't know the timing spec, but your vacuum advance on the distributor may be shot or the weights and springs inside the distributor may be worn out.

I just put in this distributor its brand new. But I did go from a high preformance to stock oem replacement. I thought putting a new coil pack on would help but hasn't. Got anything else?

Well lets start from the beginning.I am asking you if when you dropped in the dist did you have number one at TDC and the oil pump drive slot facing from front to back??.

Have you replaced the timing chain and gears? If so, you may have it out of time there. If not, how many miles are on this engine? It may be time to change them out.

Dosen't matter if it's hei or points. I'd suggest at idle set it around 12-14 deg BTDC, total mechanical advance at 3000 around 36-40. You say it runs like crap, explain.

Still need to know that he lined up the oil pump drive slot with flashlight and a long screwdriver so it was facing front to back while it was at TDC on number one.If that wasn't done,it's one or two teeth off in the timing.

Glad to hear it was a simple fix without money out of your pocket.
