Horn Honks When Trying to Start Suburban

2002 Suburban 2500HD. Suddenly when i get in to start the vehicle, the horn blasts for as long as the key is turned, the usually orange security light turns red with a picture of a battery and the suburban does not start.
Accidentally discovered today that if i step on the brake pedal while attempting to start it, it DOES start. Wow. Not sure how these two things go together.
Any ideas?
