mixture control solenoid

I own a 1981 Chevrolet Caprice Classic V6. My mixture control solenoid makes a constant ticking noise when the engine is running. When I disconnect it the engine is running smoother and the ticking stops. My “Check Engine” light comes on and stays on. When I drive a constant speed, for example 40 MPH, the engine runs irregular.
I already replaced the sparkplugs, sparkplug cables, rotor and distributor, checked the ignition timing and checked all vacuum hoses. I have a propane installation and the engine is running irregular on gas and on propane.
Can anybody tell me what is wrong? <O
