need help 5.3 canyon mystery

Today I took the truck to a mechanic in another town about 15 miles away.
With his scan tool we could see the shift solenoids getting the commands from the pcm correctly but the trans would not shift to 3rd or 4th gear. After driving for about 10 minutes we lost second gear so now the truck only has 1st gear and reverse. And now the truck has a trouble code P2771. After a quick glance at Google this could be a few things. I found a guy on the 355nation forum that had about the same problem that ended up being the trans pump and some disks. What ever the disks might be i would assume he meant clutch plates. My plan now is to tow the truck to the big city and have a transmission shop diagnose. What a nightmare. ( Hopefully the transmission shop will have some answers and it won't need a rebuild. The code seems like its related to the 4wd system which is odd.
Keep us updated, really curious to know what the cause of all this is?
This may be a dumb question but the truck does have fluid in it eh?
