Default New member engine building question.

Hi, Can I ask everyone, their opinion about why I can see no one suggests any gasket goow, of any type, between the oil pump and the rear main bearing cap, my cap mating surface is very rough, i.e. not machined up very flat? I know the oil pump is a very tight torque on the fixing bolt, but just don't see any suggestions as to why not carefully use something? Any opinions?

Not using a sealer on internal engine parts is SOP

This is only my second Chevy engine build, but I've built lots of other car and Hundreds of motorcycle engines and although I'm pleased you bothered to answer and all, I cannot agree with your 'Standard Operating Procedure' less. Please bear in mind, I just fitted the rear main bearing cap and everywhere I read says; put good RTV around the main oilway in the cap (as well as the junction of the rear main seal). Not loads so that it squesses out into the oilway, but everyone thinks it's important? The oil pump to rear main cap is just one junction earlier in the oil delivery route, so why not guarantee a good seal here to save some oil pressure lose?
