Default newbie with a starting problem

Newbie here, just joined this site for the tech support that looks pretty solid, so here I go...

I have a 2001 Monte Carlo LS with 170K on the clock. My daughter uses this car as her daily driver, and lately has had starting problems. I recently watched her pull into our driveway and saw her put the gear in the "park" position just before she came to a complete stop.

To get the car started, I had to rock the car back and forth, while at the same time, turing the ignition key to get it started. Could this starting problem be a transmission issue?

I have already ruled out the battery and I don't think it is a starter problem either, but not 100% sure.
If it is the tranny, is there a switch or a gear that needs replacing, and are any special tools required?
Looking forward to any feedback.

I'd suggest holding the shifter tight into park, then try to start it.

The ignition switch at the base of the steering column is a high failure rate item on these vehicles.

1970. You can tell by the placement of the turn signals directly under the grille.
1969 they were under the headlights.
1968 they were next to the headlights.

I tried that, but it didn't change anything.

I'm not sure if this thread was hijacked, but the monte Carlo is a 2001.

I'm not a secure method of your car, but some of the Saab can be set to stop automatically after a certain time. If you are immobilized, you must press the remote control to restore, even if the door is open and the keys in the ignition.
