Default overheating?

I just bought the car at an auction, its a 87 caprice with a 305. I drove it down the road a lil ways maybe 5 miles and the temp gauge was around 220-230, i thought it was overheating so i have replaced the waterpump and thermostat.I havent drove it since to see if it goes to the same temp, but was that normal? I wasnt running the a/c only the heat and it was on low, but if someone could tell me the reg running temp of this car i would really appreciate it.

Default RE: overheating?

220 would be ok even 230
water boils at 212 at atmospheric pressure right
but water under pressure boils at a higher point
since you have a radiator cap that should be around 15 psi
1 psi of pressure raises the boiling temp 3 degrees
so 3 degrees times 15 psi equals 45 more degrees it raises it
so 212 plus 45 is 257
so u should be ok
the water wont boil until 257
also on another note
thats why you should open a radiator cap while its hot
it loses the pressure right away and that 240 something water boils instantly apon reaching atmospheric pressure
hope this helped you and not confused you

good luck
