Pulling my hair out!
Ii picked up 2008 chevy silverado 6 months ago and been dumping money into it. Time for the inspection so i plugged my code reader in, and I'm getting all sorts of codes. Anyway, long story short, I've been at this freaking truck for 2 weeks and making no head way. Heres the issue, I have multiple circuits that are shorting and not blowing a fuse. I installed all new ground straps, and all new grounds at original locations. I cleaned all chassis and block surfaces that was previously grounded. Still having issues. Went to the fuse box and checked for parisitic draw and its pulling 13.07 volts on 43 circuits! I put my power probe 3000 to locate the short and its directing me to all the grounds. Every circuit in the truck is either open or short and not a single fuse is blown! Truck runs like crap but it still starts and drives. I put my lead to my multimeter to the negative post on battery and the other to the chassis and block. That too is giving me a 13v reading! When does it end. I disconnected the bcm, ecm, tcm, fscm, starter, alternator, radio, headlights, tail lights and cabin fuse box and still getting a 13v draw while the truck is off. I pulled the fusebox and replaced it with a new one and still the same issue. Today I tore off all the wire loom and inspected the wire. All is fine. I checked continuity (in which I never depended on). I don't know what else to do. I love the truck and invested a ton into it. I enjoy fixing them and customing them to my style and taste. Been doing it now for 32 years but this got my frustrated and lost. I know more that the average bear when it comes to wrenching but I'm no tech. I know everyone is going to tell me to do a drop voltage test, but I'm having troubling understading the method and how to execute the test. Also so I'm shooting in the dark. I have no start point. I'm sure the last owner tried to do something and crossed a wire somewhere. (Google AI says its not a ground fault but a direct feed into the ground) Anyway, the last owner doesnt answer any of my calls nor return my messages. He knows he screwed me. It is what it is. Moving forward. I want my truck to run and operate the way it should. I just lifted it 6 inches and would like to do some mudding next month. Any thoughts people, could really use the help.
Thoroughly check the alternator: Unplug it and check if the voltage persists. If it disappears, replace or repair the alternator.
