Default Radiator cap bursts then engine stalls

Hello,
I'm new to the site, I'm supposed to be going on a date tonight and would love to drive my toy but I'm afraid we'll be left stranded.
I have a '68 chevelle with a 307 v8.
While driving in the Arizona heat at a stop sign, my radiator cap purged most of my radiator fluid onto the ground(I have no reservoir) in a few seconds, then the car stalled and would not start for about 15min. This has only happened twice and about a year apart. Any idea what it could be? Maybe the radiator cap?
Thank You for your responses!

Do you have a temp gauge or just a light? What did it show?

Hello and thanks for the response.
I have a temp gauge but even on the hottest days (110+) here in AZ I have no problem stepping on the gas and keeping the temp below 250. I have an electric fan and shroud also.
It's just odd because the two times this has happened, I wasn't driving crazy, I was stopped at a stopsign.
Thank you

When the cap purged I assume it was up at 250 or more?

I'd do a standard tune up on your cooling system...

Run a Flush and clean system
Replace Thermostat with OEM degrees.
Replace Radiator Cap
Replace hoses as necessary (inspect carefully)
Buy an Aftermarket Reservoir and install
Check Fan for fast, and thermocouple for engaging Fan at design temp.
