SBC 355 piston choice
My current 355 short block is tired so I'm rebuilding a roller short block I have together to replace it. My question is piston choice. For starters I know the typical that head is boat anchor, waste of time replace it won't make any power, buy an aluminum head deal so please don't bother it's not the question. But my current short block has flat tops and it ran pretty strong for years, the heads are a set I bought back in the 90s that are 76cc open chamber 993 castings from Aerohead a division of INDY Cylinder head that have s/s 2.02/1.60 valves, screw in studs, bronze guides and came with an optional bowl port. They don't have a ton of miles so They're still in good working order. Something I didn't address the last time I had the off I did more work to them, I re polished the valves worked the pockets and guide bosses and did some mild runner work and polished the exhaust ports. What I didn't address was intake valve un shrouding and gasket match, when I open up around the intake I'm going to add chamber volume, they're a nice set of heads it would be a shame to ditch em like many would suggest so I don't feel the need to replace them at the moment and surprisingly they do make nice power my truck actually runs fairly strong despite popular belief. I had 9:1 at best before now it would be below that not ideal. I found a set of Speed Pro pistons H618CP that have a . 125 dome thats -3.5 cc and says will net approximately 9.2 w 76cc so that should offset the chamber work very close. Does anybody see a problem with that as far as detonation on 93 pump gas? How thick of a head gasket should I use to get an ideal quench supposedly there 025 in the hole. Obviously this is all approximate without actually being able to physically check it all. I want to go roller eventually but likely just reuse my current camshaft which is a Howards 112031-08 which is . 480/231° @ .050 106 CL 108 LSA FT, it has an original Torker with a 2" spacer adapter for a modded Qjet I had but I just picked up a nice old holley contender 300-36 intake. It's just a fun street truck/ semi daily nothing else, may seem long but I wanted to put everything on the table to hopefully make answers easily with out a lot of questions, Any input would be appreciated.
