Speedometer Cable racket

Speedometer Cable racket
I have an '85 Chevy Caprice
Rear wheel, 2WD
4.3L V6 Engine
4-Door B Style Body
The speedometer cable is making a racket like it may be dry (I think ever car I've ever owned started making this noise eventually). Otherwise, the speedometer appears to work just fine. Its more of a nuisance than a problem. Is there some way to remedy this with out replacing the cable or is this one of those maintenance issues where its better to just replace the whole thing once you get into it.
Thanks
