I have a 76 Chevy PU K10 with a 400

I go thru a couple of starters a year. They have different issue but most get to the point that they grinding and sometimes lock. It is the same shimmed or not. I have replaced the flywheel with not change. Any ideas would be great.

I have had one housing break, one that the shaft started shifting about 1/2 inch, some that just got to the point the were grinding too much, had one that after just 3 months sounded like a car collision. All were new, no rebuilds. This has been going on for years

how are you applying the shims? have you tried just applying 1/2 a shim to the outside bolt? this will turn the starter into the flywheel

I have tried one in the back to see if it would seat better, no help

 

what do you mean one in the back? do you mean the outboard bolt?
did you check out the link?

 

Outboard. It will run fine for about 3-5 months, then mess up, put in a new one then repeat

 

inspect the block make sure its not cracked. have you tried replacing the bolts? maybe theyre stretched and its making the threads too loose allowing it to back out
