Thick gray smoke 95 ZR2 ??????????????
oK my 95 ZR2 is blowing gray thick smoke. Not all the time only if i run for 2 miles or so shut it off and start it up 20 minuets later it blows thick gray smoke. What could be the symptom. For one it leak antifreeze, and tranny fluid. i checked both today, all good. I recently replaced the fuel pump. It doesn't do it all the time I drove a couple of different times today and no smoke. Another question what does it mean when a vehicle blows out blue smoke, and gray smoke. Any input will help
It depends on the smell of the smoke, not the color... white/light grayishsmoke indicates coolant, thick reddish smokecan betranny fluid, blue/grayishis usuallyoil. The color of the smoke it makes can vary with the brand though... The problem you have is most likely an intake manifold gasket.
It smells like oil. I drove maybe 3-4 miles this mourning and there was a little, very little cloud of smoke at times only on take off. But nothing like last night, the same route, actually only half of the route. It was a lot of smoke.intake gasket greatthanks for the reply
well now it don't smell like oil. It smells like coolant. Which i do have a leak. I was told the leak is comin from the freeze plugs. It only smokes after i start it up then shut it off then it up again then it smokes
Usually gray smoke is an indication that your fuel ratio is not correct. I would also suspect a bad compression. This I think is common among various Chevy vehicles. The reason being that composite materials and alloys are used to make the engines more efficient and lighter and as a consequence, as time went on gaps open up between the surfaces hence oil sipps/slips through.

jffgin,
If your AC hasn't worked in a few years, I'm betting that you'll need more than a charge... but that's another post.
You're motor (and mine, unfortunately) are notorious for intake manifoldgasket problems. Mine was discovered (about 4 months ago) when I noticed a few drops of antifreeze on the garage floor.Closer inspectionreveiled that the "drip" was coming from a freeze plug... or at least that's what I thought.
I went to the local garage and they were able to show me wherethe antifreeze was leakingfrom the intake manifold, (the top of the intake manifold was damp) down toward the back of the block, and then downfromwhere the freeze block is.
I'd haveyour coolant system pressure checked to confirm that this is not the issue. Otherwise, your antifreeze can work its way into your engine's internals, thereby trashing your motor.
Good Luck!
Also, if it's a freeze plug, I doubt that "smoke" would be a major issue...

did you fix it or did u pay a mechanic to fix? I could it fix it myself no problembut it isto cold for me to fix myself being I have no garage. Can't be cheap for a mechanic to fix it.thanks for the input. good luck
