transmission swap
4.3 shares the same bellhousing as the chev/gmc 350. so, it'll bolt up, but the difference is in the clutch packs inside. 700r4 behind 4.3's have a couple less clutch packs, as the 4.3 doesn't put out as much torque. now, these 700r4's will bolt up and run fine as long as you are not putting a ton of power to them, or beatin on them. also, the mid 80's trans am small blocks are the same as chev. up to the early 80's, buick, olds, pontiac were different than chevy, but nowadays, same. if you just need to get up and going, a 700r4 will work.
I'm not so sure about there being less clutch packs. if he's talking standard tranny like this whole thread has been about its either an nv or a borg warner series 5 speed, or in some cases the ol sm465 4 spd. but they all use the same clutch.. and i've rebuilt hundred's of 4l60's and they all have been the same, whether 4.3 or 7.4l. the only problem is if your truck DIDN'T have the 700r4 in before you lack the vacuum switch and wiring for the torque converter lock up, which without it you'll eat the tranny alive fast. if you have it and you do the swap, check to make sure the vacuum switch is functioning properly
