Default Valve guide replacment on 305?

Im confused on how to do valve guides. My car sat for 2 years and the guides dried up.

People keep telling me different things.

How do you really do valve guides in your garage?
Should i do more hen just the guides or can i just replace the guides?

Im starting to think some mechanics are retarded. one mechinac said i can beat them out and use a rubber malet to put in new ones and take out the old.

So my guides are toast and I dont have enough to have a shop do it or barley do it myself

Default valve guide's

i think you have your termanology turned around your saying they dried up ,then you are talking about valve seal's .the valve guide's are what the valve's ride in and they generaly have remove the head's and bore the guide's out with a valve guide machine then drive replacement's in . the seal's can generaly be put on the heads with out removing them .
try to put umbrella seal's on if you can they sheild the oil better '

So to keep oil from leaking in to the pistons and fowling up my spark plugs i just need to do the valve guide seals? So I can just do the seals and it be all good?

well that's a judgement you and your mechinic have to make ,miles on the engine ,leak down test on the engine to see how bad the valve seat's are ,if the mile's are not that bad and the valve seat' are not a issue you can get buy with outting seal's on it . but depending on how bad the vale guide's and seat's are a fair amount of oil can get buy them .
i am not shure what the seal's look like on the 305 but on the older 350's ,327's ect. only used a o=-ring seal that fit between the valve lock's and the valve spring retainer and it was more of a (suger pill) the only oil that they stopped was what little oil ran down between the valve locks and retainer .
a lot depended on how tight the valve guide's were if you had room inside the valve spring a good short term fix with out pulling the head's was to use umbrella seals wholud sheald the valve stem and top of the guide from to much oil .

Well thats great news. the car ran fine until it sat for so long. i clean the plugs and 5 minutes later it dies from oil on them.

I thought i was going to have to just replace the guides. but the umbrella seals are much easier to deal with.

Whats the tool called that i use to put air in the cylinder?

Man thanks for the correct information. You made this project a whole lot easier for me. from not on im coming here for information instead of retired mechanics and yahoo answers lol.

on yahoo you dont even get answers. you get ppl say stupid crap that has nothing to do with your question lol

Thank you though. it helped alot. I bought a seal kit of 16 for 6.60 and 3 bucks for shipping.

Now i can fix that engine and sell it and swap in a diesel motor to use bio fuels.
I just hope i can get one cheap enough and one that works with the 700R4 trans on it

good luck on the 305 they arn'tbad engines i had one in a 87 1/2 ton it might get pricy converting to a deisel when you look at the fuel cost saving and how much practicle use you get out of it you reallu got to put some serious miles on it to pay off in the end .i looked at getting one when i got my 2500hd but the extra $5000.00 cost with the allison trans and how little i drove it just did not make sense .

I was going to go with a 6.2 chevy diesel because that one can connect to my 700r4 transmission.
But after reading specs and fuel milage at 22 mgp highway I decided to go with a hydrogen fuel cell which should get me at least 10 more mpg.

The only problem with doing this is trying to juggly my almost 10 month old baby while trying to get a job so i have some spending money and try to work on my projects lol

SOOO TIRED lol
