What all does an Interior Lamp Control Module do and do I have to have one?

What all does an Interior Lamp Control Module do and do I have to have one?
I believe mine drained my battery. So I have removed it. The only thing I can see is that the dome light will not work with the doors.
However, I can turn the headlight switch all the way up and the dome light comes on.
So, what all does an Interior Lamp Control Module do? Do I have to have one?
