Unhappy working on timing

I have a 76' Chevy k-10 that had the 350-turbo and i just dropped a 454 in there. I am currently working on the timing and I had it TDC yesterday and set the distributor and as soon as I cranked it over a couple of times the engine started making a loud noise. I have cranked it over a couple few times before and it sounded normal. So I took out distributor and cranked it over again and it was making the same noise. I thought at first it was misfiring but I have no clue what happened. Anybody has any ideas or know of a mobile mechanic? I dont wanna tow it somewhere and have it be a minor problem that I could of fixed. Any help is awesome.

Thanks,
James Heck

Need more background on the engine. Is it a rebuild, used, crate? If it is a rebuild, did you prime the oil pump?

I should have caught this earlier, the distributor drives the oil pump. Is the drive shaft from distributor to oil pump installed?

i put oil in the sump before i started turning over the engine. im not sure how to actually prime the pump besides oil in the sump and turning over the engine without distributor in.

You need to spin the pump in oil before you install it.

Again, as I posted the distributor drives the oil pump.If you have been cranking it without the distributor, you been cranking it over dry.

If you cranked the engine without the distributor you have cranked it dry or what ever prelube it had on assymbley. AGAIN the distributor drives the oil pump, without it, AND the shaft from it to the oil pump, you IMO have a screwed up an engine.
