In SoCal, I'm getting 36mph hwy with a few mods (intake, exhaust), and 24mpg city. Coming back from the SEMA show in Vegas I pulled a 32.6mpg average for the whole trip. No complaints here!

Power...buy the 2.4L for sure if you're concerned about ponies - it has 175hp stock. By adding an intake, a special muffler, and mobil 1 synthetic you can bring that number up to 190 which feels quite peppy. GM also has cams available if you want to get deeper into modding, as well as perf exhaust manifolds, etc.

Buy another one? Yep! I'm currently selling my '06 ( HERE ) as we are getting the new Panel version that comes out soon (available for order in January - see here for details). GM has also announced an SS version to be released summer of '07. That model will have the 260hp turbo engine from the Solstice - it's gonna move!

You can't go wrong with an HHR - smooth, quiet inside, great handling (with a sway bar), and a blank canvas for modding!

Oh, and if anyone's interested in my highly modded ride - I will deliver it anywhere in the continental US for $500.

Regards,

No matter which engine you get fuel consumption is rated the same. 26City/30Hwy. I have the 2.4L VVT. I run Mobile 1 5W30 full synthetic, I have a Thrush Turbo Exhuast no Intake (Yet). Use 87octane pee water and Prestone 0-60 Octane Boost every 4th Fill up. I drove to Vegas 12-1-06 hole trip including 2 stops in Barstow,CA and Primm, NV. I got 34.2MPG at one point the DIC said 37.5MPG but I knew that was to good to be true, maybe the high altitude or something. Not Bad! I might say, on the streets I usually get about 22-24MPG, but I blame that on lots of traffic lights in my over populated town. Keep in mind I also have a fiberglass 12" enclosure the speaker and box it self weighs 45 lbs. and a Punch amp, the reason for naming the brand is anyone who has one, or ever owned one, or pickup one up can tell you they are not light amps couple that with my 2 kids wife and me. My HHR has 21,000 miles on it.

i have the 2.2 and love it. i would buy another in a heartbeat and not even think about it.
around town i get 21 to 23mpg and on the road i get 26 to 32 depending on wind and how fast i drive. i usually run 70 to 90 mph.

i dont go by the DIC much. i fill it up and look at the miles driven and that is the mpg that i use.

daughters cobalt with the same engine gets 24 to 26 mpg and 32 to 36 on the road.

We have the 2.2 and 5 speed, 22-24 town and 30+ highway. On a 2400 mile road trip this summer we avg 35 highway, loaded down and 70 mph most of the time (or more).
