Default 00 Impala Coolant Questions

Hi,
My father put in about a gallon green coolant in the fill tank, is this going to be a problem?
Why did the car need so much coolant without any visable signs of a leak?
Thanx in advance!

It is pretty common to have intake manifold gaskets starting to leak on these. I would take a real close look and you might find some spots around the manifold where it has been leaking and burning off. Try to see how much time it is between top-offs to determine how bad the leak is. Does it have the 3.4L engine?

Sorry, it is 3.8.
Is there a kit I can purchase to make the repair?

I am sure that your 2000 impala uses the orange dexcool and i noticed you said that green was put in the recovery tank? The two coolants are NOT COMPATIBLE!!!!! that can cause lots of damage, when the two diffirent types of coolant come in contact with each other they form a thick rust/brown colored mud that will block up water jackets, coolant lines, and thermostats. Also this will start to corrode internal parts of the engine. Take it to a mechanic and get your engine coolant drained out immedialtey and have it flushed a few times.

I agree.... get the gasket fixed (most likely culprit)....
and flush the engine... the red and green antifreeze do not MIX....

being a 2000.... you were way overdue for a dexcool coolant change... it has a life of 5 yrs or 150,000 miles...
