Default 04 Impala OEM CD Upgrade to OEM MP3 Help

Here's my dilemma... I want to replace the factory CD player in my 2004 Impala. I want to replace it with a factory CD/MP3 player. The model number for this replacement is 10348717 and is identified with "MP3" imprinted on the display glass.

I have looked at a lot of aftermarket sites selling this CD/MP3 player. As usual, they say to contact the Chevy dealership and they will tell you if the particular model will fit your application.

- Problem #1. I have contacted 3 Chevy dealerships and they all claim they don't know if it will fit. Their standard response is only replace it with the like model#.

- Problem #2. The aftermarket sites all say if the car is not listed as being a fit, don't buy it. However, they all seem to have their own list of applicable fits. I have listed a sampling below - of which the 2004 Impala is listed.

Here's what I do know... I know the plugs are the same type (24/12) even though that guarantees little. I have been told during my research that the CD/MP3 player that fits in the same model year trucks are definitely not a fit. Their model # is totally different. I also know that I will need to have the new CD/MP3 player reprogrammed at a dealer to "erase the old VIN" and accept the "new VIN" - for a fee, sometimes negotiable!

So, does anyone know of a dealer who can answer the fitment question or had any experience with upgrading their 2004 Impala CD player with the CD/MP3 player (10348717)? I would dearly appreciate the help!

Default Solution and End

Well, based upon the lack of activity, I'm not sure many really care about this topic, but I thought I would put it to rest with the final solution.

I decided to buy a head unit model# 10348717 that would play MP3s (it came from a 2005 Cavalier).

Doing my upfront work, I called around to dealerships and non-dealers looking for prices to do a VIN relearn on the GM Tech 2. What I found was that dealers were pretty much the ones I was going to have to deal with, non-dealers really didn't either understand or didn't have a Tech 2 scanning tool. After talking to 20+ dealers in an hour+ driving range, I found that most charged between $65 and $105 with no room to wiggle. I found 1 that would do it for $45 and finally my choice for 1 dealer in a small town (who I will buy my next impala from) who did it for $35. I brought procedures since they said "Let's give it a try".

Dash came off as advertised and I hooked it up without any issues. Problem was the one I bought did not eject CDs. Talking to the ebay seller, I was SOL since it had been purchased 3 months earlier (my fault for not getting to it sooner). It took 2+ more months to find an affordable one. I bought it from LKQ and it works pretty well.

Drove to the dealer the next day and they were great and had it done in less than 10 minutes. Additionally, the OEM radio I replaced was model# 10335223.

So, bottom line, the MP3 version works in the 2004 Impala.

Well this topic being old, i doubt no one is searching for it. Put here is my take:
The steering controls don't work on the Canyon/Colorado version (like you posted), only the Cavy/Venture version
The Canyon/Colorado MP3 unit does NOT work properly in these cars (that's the first one I tried). Yes, I read it can be "modded" to sorta work. The issue is the data cabling between the radio and the BCM is different (and therefore the Tech 2 does not "see" the radio). The guy the set mine up today worked on my Monte and a Canyon/Colorado radio for a LONG time.

As for the Cav/Venture model I now have.... YES, it does work with the wheel controls and all the other neat stuff my stock radio does. Sad, it was made in 12/2003, but GM never offered it on our platforms....

Default Steering Controls

The steering controls don't work on the Canyon/Colorado version (like you posted), only the Cavy/Venture version
================================================== ===
Not sure I mentioned "steering controls" anywhere since my Impala doesn't have them (only cruise control functions). All I tried for my replacement was the 10348717 from the Cavalier/Ventura.

I intially looked at some from Chevy truck MP3 models but was told immediately that there was "no way". So, I stayed in the 10348717 world only.

Default Thanks for the info.

I have a 2002 Impala LS. Thanks to this thread, I was able to get a 10348717 off of E-bay and have my dealer reprogram it. CD, AM/FM, and steering wheel controls all work great.

I plan on adding an Isimple Ipod Gateway ISGM575 ( The iSimple GateWay - Advanced Car Integration Kit for the iPod and iPhone ) and a HDRT High Def Radio adapter ( The iSimple NuRadio (HDRT) - HD Radio Upgrade for the iSimple GateWay )

I'll post an update when I get it installed.

2002 Impala with GM Delco 10348717 MP3 CD Player AM/FM/RDS

The Add-on units:
Isimple Ipod Gateway GM5 ISGM575 The iSimple GateWay - Advanced Car Integration Kit for the iPod and iPhone
Isimple HDRT High Def Radio adapter The iSimple NuRadio (HDRT) - HD Radio Upgrade for the iSimple GateWay

I updated firmware on the Gateway to Release Date: 01-18-11 Version: 788b

Results:

IPOD / Iphone
---------------------
It works with Iphone 3GS IOS 4.3.1.

Using IPOD app:
Text displays on radio as expected, steering wheel controls work.

Using FLAC player app:
No text is displayed on Radio.
(Who cares, it sounds GREAT!)
I used the controls on the IPOD to select songs.

HD Radio
--------------
The HD Radio works, you can store presets using the 6 buttons on the radio. RDS style text is shown on radio display. Sound quality is better than FM, but not as good as the Iphone.

Note that HD radio comes with female Motorola style antenna connector, and you
will need to split the internal antenna cable to go to the radio as well as the
HD Radio. (An antenna splitter cable will need to be purchased separately).

Onstar
----------
Remains working as expected

Steering Wheel Controls
-----------------------------------
Remain working as expected
