2003 chevy impala abs/traction control issue
When driving, sometimes randomly or if I hit the brakes hard the ABS light and the Traction Control light will come on and the Check Engine light always stays lit. The Traction Control light will ding a couple of times and then eventually go away. After that happens it will make a grinding/humming noise every 30 seconds or so, the gas peddle will have a little tension to it and it will make the noise when I press the peddle harder.
It goes away when I shut off the car and it will only happen again randomly or like I said, if I press the brake super hard.
To better explain the sound it makes: to me, it is similar to what it sounds like when you slam on the brakes and your ABS comes on.

There are a few things that could be checked, but I haven't seen all these issues together on the same car. A hard application can be enough to enable the ABS but GM only turned on the low-Trac light on some vehicles when TC or ABS was activated.
The diagnosis may have to come with a scan tool that will check the history codes to go further. I haven't seen one yet on this car but a brake pedal switch glitch might be a possibility. Hub assemblies that have some looseness (.003-.004") can sometimes set intermittent ABS codes. These will usually go away after the key is cycled, but ABS will be de-activated during the current cycle. Patterns can be checked with a graphing meter or bi-directional scan tool that allows the wave form patterns of the speed sensors to be read.
The humming will be the pump activating. During initialization (key on) it will perform a self check, and also will activate when TC or ABS is called for. It shouldn't operate randomly. There aren't many visual checks you can make unfortunately.

A good sized or well equipped independent shop should have the bi-directional scan tools and meters necessary to diagnose your car. You can ask them if they have this type of equipment and do ABS / TC diagnostic work. If there isn't anyone in your area who does this then the dealer will be the alternative. Many times the dealer is a little more expensive. This doesn't mean that you should go with the cheapest place. Sometimes an independent shop without the right equipment could end up being more expensive in the long run. A well equipped shop of any kind will not have cut-rate prices for electronic diagnostics and repair.
I just got my 07 impala ss back from the dealer for almost the same problem. I will be driving and the traction control will kick in and my abs, and it will go off when it wants too. it was covered and they said it was the sensors in the hub. Some other models do the same thing, so check there first. I am almost sure that's what it is.
This is an older post, but I have a similar problem with my 2003 Impala.
The traction control light came on along with the ABS light. I was told by an amateur mechanic that I should not worry about it, to ignore it since traction control system is only for wet conditions. I do worry somewhat though. I cannot get it to go off. I have the TCS turned off but the warning is still on along with the ABS light. That is what brought me to this site in hopes that someone would know what to do. I'm tired of driving and looking at these lights and also wonder if there is something wrong. Any help will be appreciated.

Please see Ziggie's post under 08 Impala abs fix.....a simple wiring check working backwards from the wheel bearing connector would be my suggestion. This wiring moves with each steering change and is very fragile......
....breaks and wears easily. Causes intermittent abs/traction control problems. Very cheap "engineering" IMO
