Post Cruise control problem

Hi; Keith here. I have an 09 Chev. Impala 3.5 engine auto trans. Hope someone can share some insight into my problem: When driving at highway speed when I push the On/Off button for the cruise control on the steering wheel, the indicator light on the button lights up as it should, however when I push the SET button, the cruise control light on the instrument cluster (dash) does not come on and the speed is not set. It is like there is no power to any function other than the On/Off indicator light on the steering wheel. Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips? It looks like the center padded section on the steering wheel needs to be removed to access the cruise control switch, but I am a little reluctant to pull it off for fear of setting off the air bag. Has anyone had experience with this? I am a bit of a backyard mechanic but don't have much savy with air bags so I'm a little leery. Thank you in advance for any insight you can give, I really appreciate it! Keith

With cruise control, you can maintain a speed of about 25 mph or more without keeping your foot on the accelerator. Cruise control does not work at speeds below about 25 mph.

If your vehicle has the Traction Control System (TCS) and the cruise control is on, TCS will begin to limit wheel spin and the cruise control automatically turns off.

Cruise control will not work if the parking brake is set, or if the master cylinder brake fluid level is low.

If these conditions do not apply, consider having the vehicle inspected by a certified technician for an official diagnosis.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me privately.

Thanks Louis for the reply. He states at highway speeds, I assume it is 60 or so. To Grandpa, with it set to on, then hit the set (speed) can you hold it down, and will it accelerate?

Smile Cruise control

Thank you folks who replied to my problem! Today I changed oil and filter and checked all other fluids and did just a general service. The fluid levels were all good and when working on the car I had the park brake set. When I completed the job I took the car for a little spin, I went out on the highway and up to speed (100 kph or aprox.60 mph) I turned off the traction control and set the cruise control and to my surprise and great relief, it worked!!! I put the trac control back on and the cruise still worked. I am not really sure what it was that solved the problem, but for now at least it seems to be working. Thank you for your input and if the problem reoccurs I'll submit another post. Very best regards, Keith
