Default draining battery

2001 Chev Impala:
there seems to be something draining my battery, even when the key is shut off...and sometimes the starter won't engage unless:
I disconnect the battery for a few minutes...any ideas?

I had a couple of problems with my 2001 Impala. One was the BCM was drawing too much current in an idle state, and drawing down the battery. Another time the instrument cluster was doing the same thing. In both cases replacement of the item resolved the issue. The instrument cluster was replaced under warranty within a year after I got the car. They held onto it for 6 weeks while the dealer troubleshot it. The BCM was identified by myself as needing replacement from error codes being seen. I had the dealer replace it as well.
