GM's latest navigation
I have A 2014 LTZ with navigation. I am real unhappy with the way it works.
Here are details:
Routing "Style" provides for "Fastest", "Ecco Route" and "Shortest Route".
Fastest – this directs to 4 lane roads, freeways / interstate roads – regardless of longer distances.
Shortest – this directs you to unsurfaced roads.
Ecco – this does pretty effective routing.
There is no option to "Avoid unsurfaced rods.
For a comparison of Garmin (windshield mounted) and the MyLinjk navigation, a 340 miles trip consisting of 2 lane roads, 4 lane roads and passing through several cities yields the following duration estimates:
MyLink navigation – 8 hours, 2 minutes
Garmin – 5 hours, 22 minutes
The Garmin is very accurate, not so good for the MyLink system – over 2 1/2 hours too long! It will "adjust" as you go but never is close to the Garmin times. Garmin is very accurate and has been so for many years, a $120 - $175 Garmin compared to a $795 GM option.

I too was unhappy with the NAV when I first got my 2014. It is far less "intuitive" than my dash mounted GARMIN. That being said, I have gradually learned it's nuances and it does a decent job although I wish the auto manufacturers would incorporate GARMIN technology rather than their proprietary systems.

OnStar navigation works differently than the new navigation. I am comfortable with navigation routing if I only use Ecco Route. I do not want to pay for Turn by Turn after the end of free trial period. The 5hr 22 min predicted by Garmin is very accurate if you do not stop and maintain the posted speed limits - I make that drive multiple of times every year. I guess I could use my smart phone and check ETA by checking Google maps during my trip, since my Impala cannot figure out ETA's!
After trying for months to get GM to address this issue, I have to accept what they keep telling - the system is "working as designed".
I think a much better description would be W A D N A D, Working As Designed - Not As Desired.
And all this for only $795.00. I'm also not sure how they are going to deliver new map data bases, or, how much they are going to cost ? ?

With my 2012 Volt, I was less than impressed with the operation of the built in NAV/GPS. I nonetheless bought the update when it was available for my Volt. The update did seem to make it run better for me. When ordering the update, I needed to provide the VIN of my car. The update was then provided with a password or passcode that was supposedly a derivative of the VIN. I put the first DVD into the player and after some initial checking, prompted me for the passcode that I entered in much the same way as entering a destination in NAV. The update went on it's merry way until about 5/8 to 3/4 done, spit out the original DVD and prompted me to insert the second DVD. This ran for about a half hour and was complete. A subsequent restart of the NAV system and I was working on the update.
