Default Need help - 2004 Impala transmission won't go in reverse

My transmission was shifting hard when going from park into any other gear. One day it decided not to shift into reverse. In fact it was acting more like it was in neutral. After shifting back and forth several times between other gears and reverse it suddenly engaged - good enough to get me out of my parking space and on my way home. Once home it would not shift into reverse at all - still acting like it was in neutral.

I figured I would change the tranny fluid and filter hoping that it would help. After that the transmission would still engage in drive with a noticeable thunking sound and jerk, but reverse is still not engaging. When in reverse I can physically push the Impala forward and back as if it were in neutral. I do hear a bit of a whining noise when in either 1st gear or reverse. 1st gear appears to still work fine though. There are no warning lights on the dash either.

Any help anybody can provide would be most greatly appreciated. I'm not sure what additional information to provide.

Is this a new issue? How often does it occur? Have you had the opportunity to take it to your dealer for an inspection? I look forward to your response.
