I have a 1996 Z71 with 166k on it. I notice that about once a day when putting it into reverse it simply won't go into gear. It feels like I'm pushing against a wall when I give it gas...it's start to move and make a creaking noise then all of a sudden gives and goes into reverse.

All other gears are working just fine...and like I said, doesn't do it everytime, just about once a day.

Please excuse the stupid question, because I know nothing about transmissions, but is it possible that just one gear can go out, and would this potentially require an entire transmission rebuild, or can just the reverse gear be rebuilt?

How is the fluid level? Does it do it before it reaches operating temperature, or does temperature have no say in what happens?
