Default Thermometer Problem leads to Faulty AC

Hello, I have a 2009 Impala and I my temperature sensor does not function anymore. This in itself is not a problem, as I don't really need to know how hot it is outside in order to drive. Often, the thermometer on the dash will read "---" degrees, however sometimes it will read a range of "-40" to "-35". The odd part is that this only seems to happen after my Impala gets wet (ie after I hosed it off and after it rained), although recent attempts to replicate this have not been successful. When the thermometer reads these subzero temperatures, it will not let me turn my A/C on, which is a bit inconvenient in these summer months, but when it does not read any temperature, the A/C works just fine. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
