Voltmeter Install

I have a 2008 Impala LT with the 3.9 engine. I would like to add a voltmeter and would like to know the following. Where is the best place to connect the gauge and secondly, where can I tap a "dimmable" source for the lamp in the gauge?

My guess is at the starter and to any good ground. the dimmer, off the headlight switch.
