Default 350 Trany problem

I have a 66 impala with a 400 small block in it. When I built the car 7 years ago a friend gave me a 350 tranny that he had laying around. He said it was from a van and it was good when he pulled it out. Anyway I put a new convertor and filter in it and installed it. The drive train has only 4,000 miles on it. I had to bore out the dipstick hole because van trannys had that skinny tube. So that is the history and here is the problem.

The car drives like a standard tranny. When I take my foot off the gas it drags down. It shifts up through the two shifts fine but a little too quick for my taste. When I'm on the road the car gets awfully hot but idles cool and it seems to use a lot of gas. That is why I suspect a tranny problem.

I rebuilt a few GM trannys in my day over 30 years ago when I was a professional mechanic so please don't talk down to me. I may have forgotten alot but still can understand what is what.

Any ideas you tranny experts probably have the answer. Please help.

Thanks
Frank
