Default vapor canister

I have a 81 k10 with the 6 cylinder engine. I drove it from washington state to texas outside of denver the fuel pump went out so i put an electric one on it and it ran great for several hundred miles but around amerillo it started acting up again. It would run great then i would drive for a hundred yards and it would die like it was out of gas. I would take of the fuel line and get gas flowing then it would do the same thing. I finally unhooked the line that goes from the vapor canister back to the gas tank and it ran perfect all the way to granbury tx. Now it is acting up again. Could it be the vapor canister or does anybody have an idea?
