Default 01 malibu code p0042

I have an 01 Chevy Malibu and I've had to put a lot of work into the car to get it road worthy.... Well, I have a check engine light that has come on and the code is p0042, which is telling me a small leak is being detected.

After inspecting the lines underneath the car... I see where the metal lines going to front are very rotted and I'm suspecting that's where the problem is because the brake lines were also rotted -- replaced them all -- but, the rubber lines look to be in decent shape.

My question is could I be over looking something, and if not, can I just replace the existing line with rubber fuel line from the canister to solid steel line near the front of the car?

I just saw that code today on a 2001 Grand Am. I looked the lines over very closely and There is a small line coming off the canister that is plastic at the canister but connects to steel just above it. The steel line is clamped to the body along with the fuel lines and ALL of them look like they could dissintegrate just by looking at them. Not looking forward to Monday and that job. I haven't confirmed though that that is the problem area. It could also be the purge valve, the gas cap or any of the lines or connections. Smoke testing is the most accurate way to find these leaks. Try to find an independant shop that does that. Around here they get about $45 to perform the test.

UPDATE:

Replaced the Purge Vent Hose from the Evap canister to the about midway along the rail with 3/8 fuel line hose.... It appeared to have worked because the code has been cleared and check engine light is none gone.

make sure that your gas filler is not rusted by the gas cap seal
